A Stroke of Grace is a nonprofit organization born from a personal journey of healing that has grown into a nationwide movement — connecting urban stroke survivors and their families in 18 states and growing through peer support groups, educational workshops, and stroke prevention initiatives.
We believe that healing is not just physical — it’s mental, emotional, and spiritual. Our programs are designed to address the whole person, creating spaces for survivors to reclaim their power, share their voices, and walk in their purpose.
Our mission is to educate and connect the Black community with stroke prevention resources, and to create a safe community of support while addressing the unique challenges faced by stroke survivors in Black communities, their families, and caregivers.
To create a world where stroke survivors and their families are empowered, supported, and equipped with the resources they need to thrive—building healthier Black communities through education, advocacy, and a strong network of care.
The purpose of A Stroke of Grace is to empower stroke survivors in Black communities, their families, and caregivers by providing culturally relevant education, compassionate support, and life-saving resources. Through advocacy, community engagement, and survivor-centered programming, we work to reduce stroke disparities and create a safe, supportive space where healing, hope, and resilience flourish.
In 2019, Dr. Christine Cosby-Gaither, a dynamic educator, wife, mother, and leader, faced a life-altering event that would change the course of her life forever—she survived a stroke. In a moment’s time, her world was turned upside down. Yet in the midst of uncertainty, she discovered a deeper purpose: to help others like her not only survive but thrive.
During her recovery, Dr. Christine noticed something striking - Black stroke survivors were underrepresented, underserved, and often overlooked. From inadequate resources to a lack of culturally relevant support, she recognized the unique challenges that Black individuals, families, and caregivers face in stroke recovery. Out of this realization and her unwavering desire to make a difference, A Stroke of Grace was born.
